Early Morning Hazmat Situation in Mobile, Alabama

June 1, 2024

Incident Overview

At approximately 2:30 AM on June 1, 2024, the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) responded to a report of a hazardous materials incident at a commercial warehouse in the industrial district of Mobile, Alabama.

Upon arrival, MFRD personnel encountered an active chemical leak involving an unknown substance. The leak was emitting a strong, pungent odor and causing respiratory irritation to nearby individuals.

Response and Containment

The MFRD Hazmat Team immediately deployed to the scene and initiated containment procedures. The team identified the leaking substance as a highly corrosive chemical called sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye.

Emergency responders established a 500-foot perimeter around the warehouse and evacuated all non-essential personnel from the area. The MFRD Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team (HMERT) was also activated to assist in the response.

Evacuations and Shelter-in-Place

As a precautionary measure, the MFRD advised residents within a two-mile radius of the warehouse to shelter-in-place. The city opened an emergency shelter at a nearby recreation center for affected residents.

Mitigation and Cleanup

MFRD Hazmat Team personnel worked diligently to contain the chemical leak and prevent its spread. Containment methods included deploying absorbent materials and erecting temporary barriers.

The MFRD also coordinated with local environmental agencies to determine the extent of the chemical spill and potential impact on the surrounding environment. Environmental testing was conducted to monitor air quality and soil contamination.

Investigation and Cause

The MFRD Fire Marshal's Office has launched an investigation into the cause of the chemical leak. Initial reports indicate that the leak occurred during a routine maintenance procedure at the warehouse.

Impact on Community

The hazmat situation caused significant disruption to the local community. Nearby businesses and schools were closed, and traffic in the area was rerouted. The shelter-in-place order affected approximately 10,000 residents, who were urged to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed.

Health and Safety Precautions

The MFRD and local health officials advised the public to take the following precautions:

  • Stay away from the affected area
  • If you experience any respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water if you have come into contact with contaminated surfaces

Updates and Information

The MFRD has established a hotline for residents to obtain the latest updates on the situation. The hotline number is (251) 208-7210.

The MFRD and local authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to the public as necessary.
